Ice Cream Rewards

This story is not mine, I heard it from a guy who was older than dirt when I was still dirt age. Back in the old days customers knew nothing about nothing about the car bizz. They didn’t know how much a car was marked up, didn’t have any internet guide to tell them how much a trade was worth, or what interest rates were good. There weren’t even window stickers on new cars that had a suggested price. The price was whatever you could get a customer to buy.

And competition was fierce. Car dealers and the salesmen knew that the chances of anybody coming back if you didn’t sell them the first time were almost nil. When they left the dealership, they were gone forever. So we used to do anything to keep them from leaving. But they still would say, “We have to mull this over tonight and we’ll be back to buy it first thing in the morning.” They never ever came back, nine times out of ten. That just meant they were going to the other Buick dealer and buying a car today.

My friend used to keep one of those little freezers in his booth and kept half gallons of the best ice cream you could buy in it. When he worked a deal and couldn’t keep the folks from going home to think about it, he gave them a half gallon of ice cream as a gift.

Pretty slick. I know if it was me, I’m headed home to put my ice cream in the freezer have a bowl and relax. I’ll worry about buying a car tomorrow.

Gotta look for every edge.
